Larry Allen – Malpais Borderlands Group, US Forest Service
It is the Malpai Borderlands Group's goal to restore and maintain the natural processes that create and protect a healthy, unfragmented landscape to support a diverse, flourishing community of human, plant and animal life in our borderlands region.
The Malpai Borderlands Group is organized and led by ranchers who live and work primarily in Southeast Arizona and Southwest New Mexico. It is a collaborative effort that is built around goals shared by neighbors within our community. Our group originated as a series of informal discussions among ranching neighbors who recognized that a way of life, and a wild landscape, that they all loved was being threatened by spread of development and subdivision from nearby towns.
The Malpai Borderlands Group was formally organized as a non-profit organization in 1994. Since then, we have pursued activities in several program areas directed at protecting and restoring the ecological diversity and productivity of our land.
Community Outreach - To enable others to benefit from our work we host several meetings each year that are focused on sharing new scientific and land management information with our neighbors and cooperators.
Fire Management - Managing fire in a big landscape the size of the Malpai region requires close collaboration between a variety of public and private partners.
Land Protection - We have protected 78,000 acres of private land through conservation easements, which will protect it as natural wildlife habitat and productive ranch land by preventing subdivision and development.
Habitat Restoration - We have undertaken many restoration projects to restore native grassland and savanna habitat, including an ambitious goal of restoring fire as a natural landscape process. We have cooperated with numerous agency and private partners to conduct prescribed fire over 69,000 acres. Our monitoring has shown that our projects are resulting in improved ecological condition over many thousands of acres.
Innovative Cooperative Land Management - We have undertaken many restoration projects to restore native grassland and savanna habitat, including an ambitious goal of restoring fire as a natural landscape process. We have cooperated with numerous agency and private partners to conduct prescribed fire over 69,000 acres. Board Member Nominations and Elections Processes

The Foundation Board nominates incumbents who wish to serve another term at the May board meeting each year.
Announcement of the Rotary del Sol Foundation Annual Meeting will be placed in the Club Bulletin before the end of May.The contents of the announcement will include the following:
Date of the annual meeting (usually the last Thursday in the month of June.)
List of incumbent foundation board members who wish to serve another three-year term.
A member Rotarian can be nominated by a fellow club member or self-nominated by submitting a short bio (75 words or less) at least two weeks prior to the annual meeting in June.The bio should be sent by email to the Bulletin editor and the Club Secretary.
All bios of all nominees will be posted within an Excel spreadsheet linked to the Members Only section of the Club website immediately after the deadline for bio submittals (refer to 2(c) above) unless there are only enough nominees to fill the number of vacancies.
Member Rotarians will be allowed to vote on-line through the Members Only section of the website.Voting will cease on midnight of the Monday before the Annual Meeting in the month of June.
New board members, and terms of office, will be announced at the Foundation Annual Meeting, or no later than the last Thursday of June each year in the Club Bulletin.
Members whose terms are expiring (Bruce Bortner and Ron Hensley have expressed their desire to serve another three years on the board.
