On July 23, 2020 at the Morning Meeting, Richard Anklam, Executive Director of the New Mexico Tax Institute gave a very timely presentation on the issues with the tax structure in New Mexico due to the Covid-19 Pandemic and the drop in oil prices. He said that the drop in oil prices and the Covid-19 Pandemic caused serious problems for the New Mexico State Budget which resulted in a need for a Special Session of the New Mexico legislature.
Among issues is the Unemployment Trust Fund which is currently paying benefits to 150,000 New Mexicans which is a huge increase from pre Covid times. Anklam said the Fund will be insolvent by September causing more borrowing from the Federal Government. He outlinesd legislation passed to deal with this funding crisis.
Governors Ball Chair Tony Pino announced that due to the postponement of the Governors Ball until next year the committee is requesting sponsors to contribute 1/2 of their commitment now to the designated Charities.
Dave Simon announced that we need 20 people to sign up to work on the Tree Project on September 12.
Christine Glidden was named RDS Rotarian of the Quarter for her work on the Navajo Hope Project which has brought food and supplies to the Navajo Nation. Congrats to Christine for another job well done.
At the July 21, 2020 RDS Board Meeting, President Ed Robertson announced that due to the Governors order shutting down in-person dining that both morning and satellite meetings will be held via ZOOM until further notice.
Tomorow's Satellite Meeting at 5:30 PM via ZOOM will feature The Corales Writing Group. Their latest project is called "Kale is a Four Letter Word".
