Club Happenings

1.  Club Meeting Updates

This past Thursday, our very special guest presenter was Robert DeBuck, Albuquerque Police Department Horse Patrol Commander.  Rob and his colleagues are the best examples of Service Above Self!  Thanks to Dan Wilkinson for inviting Rob to join us!  And our Rotarian of the Day was our Rotary Foundation Donations Coordinator and an excellent Rotarian, Mark Abramson!

This Thursday, our scheduled speaker is Wyatt Powers who will present on Generational Marketing.  This will be a very interesting presentation, so please try to attend, either at Jimmy's Cafe or on Zoom.

2.  Club Strengths and Improvement Opportunities

For those who were not able to attend the Club Assembly on what the Club is doing well and what we can do to improve, here is a recording to that very important discussion.  We will be discussing these opportunities and specifically how we will address them at our next Club Board Meeting on January 18th.

3.  Beans and Rice Reminder!

We have raised ~$1200 for Beans and Rice so far this year.  Our goal is $3000.  If you want to make a donation, you can use Venmo (make payment to HermanHaase@RotaryDelSol30 with the caption "Beans and Rice 2023"), call Treasurer Herman at 1-815-483-8630 to use a credit card, or mail your donation to the Rotary Club of Albuquerque Del Sol, PO Box 93578, Albuquerque, NM  87199-3578.  We have had this partnership with the Roadrunner Food Bank of New Mexico for many years, and it is one of most important fundraisers.

4.  Troop 285/Pack 442 Updates

As you all may know, we are now the charter organization for Boy Scout Troop 285 and Cub Scout Pack 442 with Kit Turpen graciously agreeing to serve as our Chartering Organization Representative.  This is an exciting new partnership, and there will be plenty of opportunities to work on service projects with them, have them attend our meetings and social events, etc.  So we'll use some space in our weekly bulletin for their updates and include some of their upcoming events on our Club webpage.

Troop285 just returned from a canoe trip to Big Bend!

5.  Governors Charity Ball Update

A lot of important activity is happening on the Governors Charity Ball front, so the mid-week Bulletins with all the details will be starting up this week.  These bulletins will also be going to Rotary Club of Albuquerque members.

6. Upcoming Birthdays and other dates to celebrate, support each other, etc.

January Birthdays!

Doreen Kelsey - January 16th

Kent Cravens - January 25th

Greg Hallstrom - January 26th

Brent Melville - January 27th

Lance Ellis - January 31st

7. Don Chalmers Memorial Grant

Even though we are in full Governors Charity Ball mode, there's no time like the present to be thinking about recipients for next year's Don Chalmers Memorial Grants!  Updated information for next year's grants is available on our Club website home page.  Please consider whom you would nominate so we can have ample candidates when we start our vetting process.

Rotary Happenings

January is Vocational Service Month.  Activities such as the "Retro" Meeting that we had earlier this year and will have again later this year is just one example of our focus on Vocational Service.  Thanks to our Vocational Service Coordinator, Bruce Bortner; and more Vocational Service activities are on the way!

District Happenings

1.  District Blood Drive Challenge:

Governor John Drusedum's blood drive challenge has been extended through the end of February.  For more information on the Blood Drive challenge, please contact President Jeff or Club Service Project Chair, Brent Melville.

2.  Rotary Leadership Institute

The next session of the Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) will be January 28, 2023 on zoom.  If you are interested in learning more about Rotary and/or if you are interested in getting into Rotary Leadership, the RLI has the best offerings within Rotary International.  Many of our members have been through RLI and now serve as instructors/facilitators. Don't miss out on this great opportunity.  And as per Rotary Foundation Donations Chair Mark Abramson, we'll be giving Paul Harris Fellow Recognitions to those members who attend and graduate RLI!  Here is the link to register (you will need to login to register - contact President Jeff or Secretary Meredith if you're having issues with your login):

3.  District Empowering Girls Conference!

On Saturday, January 21st, our District will be putting on a very special online event about empowering girls, which is one of RI President Jennifer Jones key initiatives. The workshop will include sessions by experts (including our very own Christine Glidden!) on what is holding our girls back in New Mexico and West Texas, and what we can do about it.  Please consider attending this very important event.  Here is a link to register:
