Club Happenings

1.  Club Meeting Updates

At this past Tuesday's Twilight Meeting, we had the pleasure of inducting Bill Hawley as our newest member.  Bill, you will be a great Rotarian!  And huge thanks to Immediate Past President Brad Ekhoff for sponsoring Bill!

This past Thursday, we heard a very informative presentation about state gun legislation from Mark Abramson.  And our Rotarian of the Day was our illustrious Club Treasurer, Herman Haase!

This Thursday, our very special guest presenter will be Liam Mathis, a new Eagle Scout from our chartered Boy Scout Troop 285.  We have a great new relationship with Boy Scout Troop 285 and Cub Scout Pack 442, so please join us this Thursday.

2.  RoadRunner Food Bank Service Event on March 18th

On March 18th from 8:00am to 11:00am, we'll be having a service project at RoadRunner Food Bank helping to sort and package food for distribution to hungry families.  Chris Van Dyck has posted this project on our Club website with an online registration in case you are not at Jimmy's Cafe on Thursdays to register there.  We need 15 volunteers, and all the volunteers will be working together on the same tasks in the same area.  We raised over $2000 this year to support the RoadRunner Food Bank, and this service project will serve as fitting closure to our support this Rotary year.  Please consider supporting a great partner of our Club!

3.  "Packathon" Service Project for Haiti

Also, on March 18th, there will be a "Packathon" for Haiti with the Albuquerque Rotary Clubs.  Since we have our service project with RoadRunner Food Bank at the same time, instead of going to the Packathon, you can support it financially by going to the website below.

4.  Update on Project SMART:

A number of us have expressed interest in participating in Project SMART to help address the opioid crisis and polluted drinking water in conjunction with the Rotary Action Group for Addiction Prevention.  Below are the steps for us to participate:

1. Form a committee of at least 5 people (Jeff is already onboard so we need 4 more).  We can have people that are not Rotarians, but a majority must be Rotarians.

2.  Take a picture with the committee and forward it to us.

3.  We will then be sent a grant agreement for the club president and incoming president to sign.

4.  After this, we will begin meetings with your committee by zoom.

President Jeff will send out a separate communication over the weekend to determine who else is interested in participating so we can get going.

5.  Our next "Retro" Meeting is being rescheduled to March 30th

Our next "Retro" meeting will be on March 30th.  More information on the Retro meeting including registration for the different host locations will be coming in the next few weeks.

7. Rotary Foundation Banquet on Wednesday, April 26th with special guest presenter (and good friend of our Rotary Club) Rotary Foundation Trustee Greg Podd!

On Wednesday, April 26th, the Albuquerque Rotary Clubs will be hosting a Rotary Foundation banquet with special guest presenter, Past Rotary International Director and current Rotary Foundation Trustee Greg Podd.  We will be recognizing those who have supported the Rotary Foundation, educate those new to Rotary about the work of the Foundation, and celebrate the accomplishments made possible by the Foundation.  Tickets are $40 per person.  For more information, please contact Rotary 5520 District Secretary Donette Wagner (505-269-4634, secretary5520@gmail.com) or Fred Bryant (505-280-4118, fredbryant300@gmail.com).  Greg is a very good friend of our Club, so let's have a strong turnout for this important event!

And here's the theme for this upcoming Rotary year!

Starting March 21st and running through early April, Rotary District 5520 will be putting on Foundation Grant Training, which is a requirement for any Club to participate in grants next Rotary year (at least two members of the Club need to attend one of the trainings to be eligible).  Here is a link to the District website if you want to register for one of the training sessions:

2.  District Conference on April 20-22 in Roswell!

Our annual District Conference ("Imagine the Possibilities") will be in Roswell from April 20-22.

The Conference kicks off officially with a catered reception inside the UFO Museum (roswellufomuseum.com/) from 6-8 pm. Re-unite with friends from across our District and make some new ones (maybe some Inter-Galactic ones). There’s the option for a round of golf at the Roswell Country Club Thursday afternoon or Disc Golf at Enchanted Lands park that same afternoon (udisc.com/courses/enchanted-lands-5T3w).

Friday events begin with registration at 8 am on the campus of Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell(roswell.enmu.edu/) in the ITC building and continue through Saturday’s emphases on youth featuring the Youth Exchange Talent Show in the Performing Arts Center following lunch.

A reception for Major Donors and above takes place at 5:30 pm Saturday at the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art (rair.org/about-amoca). There will be a Cocktail ½ hour at 6 and Conference Banquet (MIB Themed) following.
