Guest Introductions & Announcements

  • Guests present:
    • Van Buren Middle School Interact club is approved.  More to follow.
    • Balloon Fiesta - Volunteers set for Saturday AM shift.  Need 2 volunteers for Friday, 10/10.
    • Greg H. said we would need more Ramp help as 4 new pueblos were brought into the program.  On 10/1, we received a 500K ramp grant.
    • John H. said the night golf fundraiser was a big success.  The School for the Blind and Visually Impaired thanked the club for our financial support, sponsorship and volunteers.  Fundraiser raised 35K.
    • MIchelle Frechette and Tony P. will be helping to recruit out-bound exchange students.
    • John Garcia recieved a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Hispano Chamber of Commerce.  Congratulations John!
    • Information about the district fundraiser for hunger is on the club's website.
    • You can sign up for Zone Greetings at the airport on the club's website.
    • The Rio Grande Rotary Club (abqriogranderotary.com) is hosting an Octoberfest celebration on 10/12 from 1-4PM.  More on their website and Faceboook page.
    • The Club's Christmas Party will be on 12/6 hosted by the Huffaker's at their home.  More to follow.

Rio Grande Community Farms (Speaker: Kelvin Schenk)

  • Youth (under 25) involvement at the farm (Los Poblanos Open Space) is very important.
  • They teach hi-desert agriculture.
    • Regenerative agriculture – keep moisture and biology in the soil.  They add organic matter to the top of the soil.  They do not turn the soil over to incorporate it.
  • Youth can be involved both passively and actively.
    • Passively.
      • Visit the property, view the gardens, take in the smells, see the pollinators, etc.
      • Multiple orchards
    • Actively
      • Walk the habitat and view the wildlife – coyotes, birds, etc.
      • Attend classes
        • Container gardening.
        • Composting
        • Pollinators  - bees, butterflies and humming birds.
        •  Orchard – 45 varieties of fruit trees and bushes.
        • Commercial level greenhouse.

* Toys - Year of Cheer is a district wide project collecting toys for UNM Children's Hospital all year round. Our first collection will end on 9/30.  Please bring a toy to a September meeting. Contact Cynde Tagg for more info.
 
 
The dates for the Fair are October 10-11 at the DoubleTree Hotel El Paso Downtown. Located at 600 N. El Paso St. El Paso, Texas (915) 532- 8733. Set up for projects at 10 am.
 
Our room rate is $139.00.  
 
Registration for the project fair is $125 and includes our International Fiesta Dinner, entertainment and full “Project Fair” participation.
