District Governor Tom Simon was our guest speaker of 8/14. He thanked the club for the many years of support given to his wife, Deborah, for her Guatamala water projects. He gave a short Rotary history including its beginning as a meeting of friends, to growing larger and having to rotate meeting places. he said the first service project was a public restroom in 1907 in Chicago. He said that Don Chalmer's legacy continues due to the many charity contributions over the years as well as giving 19K to the Rotary Foundation last year - 3rd in the district. Rotarians were the creators of the United Nations charter in 1945. Rotary has approved over 50 grants to the Ukraine. He suggested we start posting on Facebook what we will be doing for service projects as a way to attract new members. Since 1997, only 16 members have sponsored a new member and he challenged those who haven't sponsored someone to do so this year.
