Bastille Day Freeloaders!

What a celebration we had last night at La Maison de Jacqueline's!  Thanks to Jacqueline for being the perfect hostess, and to everyone who attended.  More Freeloaders and social activities to come throughout the year, and a great opportunity to bring potential members!

July 14th Club Meeting

Our July 14th speaker this week was Caillin Murray, Volunteer Coordinator for Meals on Wheels of Albuquerque.  A Rotary Del Sol team has been volunteering with MOW since 2015 delivering to one of the highest poverty districts in the city.

This year, Meals on Wheels is celebrating its 50th anniversary growing from just 20 families served to over 160,000 meals served each week.  The clients are anyone who has a need and meals are charged on a sliding scale.  While most recipients are seniors, the youngest recipient was two.  The meals can be customized to meet a variety of medical needs.

Meals on Wheels combats senior food insecurity (1 in 5 seniors in Albuquerque) and loneliness. For 80% of recipients - their delivery person is the only person they see all week.

Rotary Del Sol started helping with MOW in 2015.  The district we deliver to is one of the poorest in the city with 34% living below the poverty level.  We currently have 4 drivers on Tuesdays: Bruce Bortner, Robert Brown, Kit Turpen and Ed Robertson.  This is down from 6-7 people on the team.  There is a need for a new driver/team on Thursdays or Fridays.

Volunteering takes around 1-2 hours a shift - and there is an app that makes everything easy.  If you want to help, contact Caillin or a member of our MOW team to get set up.

Club Meeting Changes

The Wranglers were back and roarin' at Jimmy's Cafe last Thursday.  We unfortunately noticed a slight delay between Jimmy's Cafe and our lead Wrangler, Bruce Bortner, who was on Zoom.  We will work to resolve this at future meetings.

Lucky Bux went well so we'll continue the process and make sure that those on Zoom can participate.  If you are on Zoom, please make sure to use Venmo for your ticket purchases, and either get someone who's attending at Jimmy's to keep your tickets or send an e-mail to Treasurer Herman (haaseh@gmail.com) and he'll make sure your tickets are in the bowl.  If you need help with Venmo, please let Jeff or Herman know and we'll help you.

This Week's Club Meetings

We have two meetings this week, a Twilight meeting this Tuesday (Nexus Brewery and Zoom) and a Morning meeting on Thursday (Jimmy's Cafe and Zoom).  Tuesday's presenter will be our very own Vicki Turpen, who we be speaking about our public education system.  We will post Thursday's meeting information once it's been confirmed.  Meredith will be sending out reminders about both meetings including Zoom login info.

Here's the Speaker Proposal Form for you to complete if you have speakers we should consider for upcoming programs:  https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfKbllpAiHsoYggme6XazNstvg5Z0TKSa9e7uhf9fDzglp-Yw/viewform?usp=sf_link

Club Board Meeting

The Club Board had its first meeting of this Rotary year last Thursday evening.  Meredith will be sending out the meeting minutes after they have been reviewed by the Board.

Birthdays!

We want to celebrate our members' birthdays, and you may have noticed that we are including birthdays (month and day, not the year) in our scrolling powerpoint that we run before our meetings start.  Some of you don't have your birthdays listed in our website, and we want to make sure not to miss yours.  If you have a moment, please log in to the website and check your profile.  You can either update it or let President Jeff know and he will update it for you.  If you are having trouble logging in to the website to check your profile, please let Jeff know as well.

Club Happenings:

1.  Ramp Build next Saturday!  Brent will send out a sign-up link.

2.  Still some slots for the School of the Blind golf tournament.  Contact Tony Pino to sign up.

3.  Greg Hallstrom is looking for "camps" to house ramps volunteers.  Contact Greg for more info.

4.  Rotary Del Sol is on social media, now including Instagram.  We've posted more pictures from the Bastille Day Freeloaders on our Facebook page and on Instagram, and we will also start posting again on our Twitter page.  Social media is a great tool (if used properly) to let the community know what our Club is doing as well as to recruit potential members.  If you have any ideas or suggestions for our social media, please let Public Image Chair Lisa Chavez or President Jeff know.  And please like, follow, share, etc. our social media.  It will help spread the good word!

District Happenings

1.  The Bi-District Conference will be August 26th and 27th in El Paso at the Plaza Hotel.  Registration is open on the District website (Home Page | District 5520 (rotary5520.org).  Several of us including Christine Glidden and I will be there.  If you haven't been to a Bi-District Conference, it's a very unique and special event with opportunities to partner with our friends across the border in District 4110.

2.  District Governor John Drusedum has established a District-wide Blood Drive Challenge from now through January 31st.  The goal is a total of 1000 units collected ("1000 Pints of Life").  Last year, the District gave out four Paul Harris Awards, and will do it again this year for the clubs with most pints donated.

Please feel free to call, text, or e-mail President Jeff (1-505-400-1403, jweinrach5520@nmia.com) if you have any questions about these surveys or about any aspect of our Club.

Let's all have a great week in Rotary putting Service above Self.
