EAA was founded in 1953 by a group of people interested in building their own airplanes.
EAA Chapter 179 (NM) is a 501c(3) tax exempt charitable organization chartered in Albuquerque on August 29, 1963, and incorporated in 1965.
Chapter 179 was awarded the Gold Level Chapter Award for their demonstrated outstanding commitment to general aviation.They have received the Gold Chapter Award every year since the program started in 2019.
One of the things they are known for is promoting aviation safety and education to the general public and introducing youth to aviation.They do this through their Young Eagles program.
Since the Young Eagle program began in 1992, EAA pilots have flown over 2.4 million young people.Actor and pilot, Harrison Ford, flew the 2 millionth Young Eagle in Oshkosh, WI in July 2016.
EAA 179 has supported neighboring chapters who host rallies in Belen, Los Alamos, Los Lunas, Santa Fe, Taos, Deming. Lordsburg, and Truth or consequences.
EAA 179 has awarded over $130,000 in scholarships to 55 recipients from 2017 through 2024 in the form of EAA 179 Aviation Scholarships, EAA Air Academy and EAA Ray Aviation Scholarships.
The annual fly-in is 9/25 at Double Eagle airport.
