This week in Rotary
On September 2, 2021 at the Morning Meeting, Mark Lautman, who has many years experience as an economic development planner was the speaker.

He has worked for the last 10 yeas as the head of the Economic Development Lab. Mark explained that today the issues for economic development are much different than 20 years ago.  Now the HR department of companies looking to relocate make the call where the company is going to land.  Companies require a well educated and available work force.  Mark said:  "Labor becomes a 0 Sum economy".  To recruit workers a city needs a good school system and a good workforce development program.

He also said that jobs are more sophisticated today and often school systems are decoupled from the needs of employers.

Service sector jobs are melting away so a community such as Albuquerque needs more Economic Base Jobs.  Albuquerque needs more remote job opportunities.  " Remote work will save us"  We should set a goal  to improve remote opportunities.  Many states and municipalities give incentives to do this.

Mark's presentation drew many questions from Del Sol Rotarians, many of whom own businesses and are employers.

Thursdays meeting also saw the induction of John Garcia as our newest member.

Tomorrow at 5:30 at Nexis Brewery and ZOOM the Satellite Group will feature a discussion on Becoming a Vibrant Club. All members are invited to attend either in person or on ZOOM.

Thursday, September 9 the Morning Meeting at 7:00AM at Jimmy's  Cafe and on ZOOM will feature Commander Josh Brown who is in charge of the patrol division of the Albuquerque Police Department. He is in charge of all "street cops" and should have some great insights into the crime situation in Albuquerque.
