This week in Rotary
On November 29 at the Regular Thursday Meeting, Serenity House Director Lou Duran  was the Guest Speaker. Her speech was titled "There is Another Way" and described a program sponsored by the New Mexico Health Department  designed to help people addicted to Opioids to find Another way to relieve pain and get off the drugs. Lou told us that even if parents do everything right their kids can still become addicted to pain killers. She described how young people transition from marijuana to pills to heroin.  She said 197 kids a day are lost to drugs in the USA.

In New Mexico in a recent year 500 families lost a child to drug overdose.  She told us about alternative therapies such as Acupuncture, non-addictive medications and deep breathing and meditation.

On a positive note Lou said New Mexico was one of the first states to allow for the sale of Narcan, a drug designed to fight an overdose, over the counter.
