'Service Above Self' was awesomely demonstrated on Thursday, September 5th by Rotary Del Sol volunteers and spouses who turned out in spades to help with the sorting of 40 boxes of Bombas socks. These socks will be in turn be delivered to more than 14 agencies that support Homeless and Indigenous communities. This event, organized by Christine Glidden of 'Women-to-Be", was extremely challenging taking place on the baking asphalt at the Salvation Army parking lot.

It was heart-warming and inspirational to witness Del Sol volunteers and spouses get to work on this very impactful project on such short notice.

Rotary del Sol provided 14 volunteers ( including spouses ) to make this a successful and efficiently operated service project.  We got the  job done in an hour's time when it was expected to take three hours!

Hats off to Ron and Cindy Hensley, Bruce and Kathy Shaffer, Lance and Sue EllisMichele and Bob Mals, Meredith Eisenberg, Bruce Bortner, Mitch Selking, Davis Riordan, Jacqueline Hockey, and last but not least Wayne Yevoli  (plus Jared Bousliman ( who was on his way there ).            .

With Gratitude and Appreciation,

Michele M. Mals

John Taylor spoke to the club about the restoration of Engine 2926.  The engine has an interesting history from hauling troops during WWII, to freight and general passengers from 1944 to 1955.  It was donated to the city for Albuquerque's 250th Anniversary.  After that, it sat in Coronado Park for 40 years until it was bought for $1.00 by the people at the NM Steam Locomotive NM Railroad Depot.  It took about 350,000 volunteer hours to restore the engine to working condition.  The organization's goal is to have it pull passengers North to South in New Mexico and maybe as far as Trinidad in Colorado.  You can view and explore the engine at the NM Steam Locomotive and Railroad Dept on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Happy Hour

The next meet and greet will be at Casa Vieja located at 4541 Corrales Rd in Corrales, NM  87048 on September 13th.  Start time is 6PM

100% Paul Harris Club

We are working on becoming a 100% Paul Harris Fellow Club, which is a significant Rotary designation for us to have.

In order to accomplish this goal, the Club and many of its members have points available to match donations.  We will match your donations 1:1, so a $500 donation to the Rotary Foundation will be matched by 500 points, which will be enough for you to become a Paul Harris Fellow if you’re not one already.

Rotary Foundation Committee Chair Jeff or a member of his Committee will be reaching out to any of you who are not currently a Paul Harris Fellow over the next month or so to help coordinate this.  In the meantime, if you have any questions about this Paul Harris Fellow matching points initiative or any aspect of the Rotary Foundation, please contact Jeff (1-505-400-1403, jweinrach5520@nmia.com).
