Our annual Rice and Beans drive goes to the end of May.  Our goal is $2,000; we are currently at $500.

RYLA is coming up.  There are 87 students committed to RYLA with 3 sponsored by our club.

RYLA needs counselors.  If you are interested, contact Jennifer or David.

We have two club members who have committed to be RYLA counselors and one who will be a guest speaker.

Greg mentioned the possibility of our club linking up with one of the 22 Rotary clubs in the Ukraine.

Jeff Molby, a Rotarian from The Caro Michigan Chemo Riders spoke to our club about cancer treatment.  He's on his fourth bicycle some 12,920 miles since leaving Caro on his want west to make people aware of early screenings and getting help for those needing rides to treatment.  His focus is on getting cancer victims to the treatment they need because some victims simply can't afford or are able to get the treatment themselves.  The American Cancer Society has a similar program.  He is very adamant about getting screened expecially if after 45 for colon cancer.  He wants to reduce the stigma of cancer and the logistics problems of getting to treatment.

We disbursed checks to the recipients of the 2025 Don Chalmers Grants.  A check was given to Robin Hill, Chief Advancement Office for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Central New Mexico for $20,000.  A check for $5,000 was given to Matt McCluskey from New Mexico Friends of Foster Children.  Dennis Comstock, Head of School, from Horizons Albuquerque received a check for $10,000.  New member, Kaleigh Hubbard, accepted a check for $10,000 for NM Kids Matter, where she is a board member.  Lastly, Jim Heering, Pathways Academy, received a check for $10,000 where it will be used to fund nine scholarships.  Recipients will be invited back to the club to tell us about how the spent the money and its impact.  You can follow Jeff's adventures at:  chemoriders.org/follow.

50 Things Every Rotarian Should Know About Rotary

30   CONCERN FOR THE AGING

One current area of special emphasis for Rotary clubs focuses o providing "new opportunities for the aging." In 1990, the RI Board of Directors urged Rotarians to identify new projects serving the elderly that emphasize intergenerational activities and the integration of seniors into society an the workplace. The following year, the board called for an approach that stressed service "with" the elderly as well as "for" them.

With the substantial upswing in the worldwide population of older persons, their needs for special attention have greatly multiplied. As citizen grow older, it becomes increasingly important for them to retain their personal independence and to remain in control of their own lives to the extend this is possible. Many Rotary clubs are seeking ways to serve the older persons of their community who face problems of deteriorating health, loneliness, poor nutrition, transportation difficulties, inability to do customary chores, loss of family associations, reduced recreational opportunities, inadequate housing and limited information about available social agencies for emergency assistance. Some clubs have initiated a valuable community service to assist older persons in retirement planning and adjustment by organizing and sharing the wealth of information available within the club's membership. Other clubs have developed foster grandparent programs and other intergenerational activities that allow seniors to use their experience and knowledge to help young people. Rotarians often can provide services which seniors can no longer do for themselves. The greatest need of aging individuals is frequently a mere expression of real caring and concern by thoughtful friends. All Rotarians should seriously consider how they and their clubs may actively participate in programs for the aging. It is one area of community service in which there is a growing possibility that each of us may some day be on the receiving end.
