Grant training opportunities on 4/2 and 4/14. Ron H. – Our club has given away $302K over the last 5-years via Chalmer’s grants for out Del Sol Foundation. Speaker: Alan Ortega - Ortega’s Weaving Shop His family has been in and around Chimayo since the 1600s. The Governor at the time gave his ancestors land based on the number of bushels they grew. Grandfather opened weaving shop in 1900.Employed 50-60 weavers at their peak all working from home on hand looms. They would barter their weaved goods for other things they needed. The Spanish introduced horses and sheep. They use 100% wool yarn. Wool dying is natural using plant-based dyes. The state capital was outside Espinola until it was moved to Santa Fe around 1850 with statehood. Alan has been weaving since he was 10 years old. Prices depend on the sizes being weaved. The longest piece he weaved was 18 feet. Longest weaved by the shop was 30 feet.
