We had two speakers at our 10/24 meeting:  Paul Caputo, from Toys for Tots and Lt. Will McMullen from ABQ Fire Rescue (AFR).  Will also brought Lt. Erin Brando from the Training Academy.  Paul said that the Marines gather and distribute toys in 6 NM counties to over 42,000 kids at this time of year.  He said December 14 is the day the toys will be distributed.  We are collecting toys at our meeting.  He recommended avoiding stuffed animals for hygiene, allergy and other reasons.

Lt. McMullen said AFR was formed in 1900.  There are currently 22 stations with #23 under construction.  With only 777 uniformed members and only 210 on duty everyday, they are the busiest department in the US. There is also 150 support staff.  The 22 stations support 185 Square miles of response area.  AFR is required to arrive at a critical call within 4 minutes.  AFR has two distinctions that stand out.  First, they are ISO Class 1 certified and second, CPSE accredited.  Less than 1% of fire departments hold these credentials. AFR is unique in several areas including their training academy which is in the top 3-4 in the Southwest.

We are starting a new article this week called 50 Things Every Rotarian Should Know about Rotary.

5  - ROTARY MOTTOES
The first motto of Rotary International, “He Profits Most Who Serves Best," was approved at the secondRotary Convention, held in Portland, Oregon, in August 1911. The phrase was first stated by a Chicago Rotarian, Art Sheldon, who made a speech in 1910 which included the remark, "He profits most who serves his fellows best." At about the same time, Ben Collins, president of the Rotary Club of Minneapolis, Minnesota, commented that the proper way to organize a Rotary club was through the principle his club had adopted-"Service, Not Self." These two slogans, slightly modified, were formally approved to be the official mottoes of Rotary at the 1950 Convention in Detroit- "He Profits Most Who Serves Best" and "Service Above Self." The 1989 Council on Legislation established "Service Above Self" as the principal motto of Rotary, since it best explains the philosophy of unselfish volunteer service.

A message from District Governor Yasser Murga:

We have received inquiries from clubs and members eager to know how they can contribute. We believe the most effective approach for our district is to send donations directly to the Roswell Club's Foundation. This will enable the Roswell Rotarians to allocate funds to where and when they are most needed. Your willingness to help and participate fills us with pride. Please send your donations to the address provided below.

100% Paul Harris Club

We are working on becoming a 100% Paul Harris Fellow Club, which is a significant Rotary designation for us to have.

In order to accomplish this goal, the Club and many of its members have points available to match donations.  We will match your donations 1:1, so a $500 donation to the Rotary Foundation will be matched by 500 points, which will be enough for you to become a Paul Harris Fellow if you’re not one already.

Rotary Foundation Committee Chair Jeff or a member of his Committee will be reaching out to any of you who are not currently a Paul Harris Fellow over the next month or so to help coordinate this.  In the meantime, if you have any questions about this Paul Harris Fellow matching points initiative or any aspect of the Rotary Foundation, please contact Jeff (1-505-400-1403, jweinrach5520@nmia.com).
