Club Meetings

This past Thursday, our special guest presenter was Village of Los Ranchos de Albuquerque Mayor, Don Lopez, who spoke about the Village's upcoming projects and its strategy related to Community and Economic Development.  We restarted our "Rotarian of the Day" at this meeting, which gives one of our members a couple of minutes to let us know a little more about him/her.  Club Administration Committee Chair and last year's Rotarian of the Year, Ron Hensley, was Rotarian of the Day.  President Jeff will be Rotarian of the Day this week, and we will work with the membership to determine Rotarians of the Day going forward.

This week we have a Twilight Meeting on Tuesday with Club Development Chair Willie Edwards working with us on setting up our various Governors Charity Ball Committees.  We also will have a meeting this Thursday.  Meredith will send out the details on both meetings later this week.

We are always look for dynamic, engaging speakers, not just locally but anywhere in the world through Zoom.  If you have a guest speaker in mind, please complete the form below, and one of the members of the Program Committee will reach out to them.

Club Happenings

1. Governors Charity Ball Update

We have the green light to call our upcoming event the "Governors Charity Ball" again, which should help with our branding and marketing campaign.  The first order of business for us is to select our charity (Rotary Club of Albuquerque is selecting its charity as well).

Here is the charity selection form and selection criteria.  We want to select the charity as soon as possible, while using our selection process, so we can start involving it in our Committees, recruiting sponsors, marketing, etc.

The due date for charity submittal forms is two weeks from today (10/16).  If you have any questions, please contact Club Fund Development Committee Chair, Willie Edwards, or President Jeff.

Each week going forward, we'll have major Governors Charity Ball updates in this section of our Club Bulletin so please make sure to stay informed.

2.  Balloon Fiesta Volunteer/Fund-Raiser update

Thanks to Dave Simon, we have three Del Sol teams of volunteers helping out at the Balloon Fiesta Merchandise Tent this year.  We initially had two but pulled a third group together at the last minute due to some cancelations.  If you take pictures, please send them to Jeff so we can put together an album on this.  Thank you to everyone who participated in this combination service project and fund-raising effort, especially given that our Ghost Tour volunteer/fund-raiser didn't manifest!

3.  Club Retro Meeting on October 20th!

On October 20th, the club will resurrect the Retro Meeting where 3 or 4 members of the club host the weekly meeting at their place of business. Besides having a completely different meeting place than we usually have at either Jimmy's or the Nexus Brewery, members will have the opportunity to experience what other member do in their jobs. In part because of our Club members meeting at different times, we have made some updates to the Retro meeting.  With the new Retro meeting, the host would determine the time the meeting would take place, since we have some members who can't attend early morning meetings. The Club leadership including our Club Vocational Service Point of Contact Bruce Bortner will work with potential hosts on how to handle food and drink.

4.  Upcoming Birthdays!

Kit Turpen - October 8th

Scott Lardner - October 13th

Dean Constantine - October 26th

Bob Nachman - October 27th

Byron Zahm - October 28th

Steve Reynolds - October 31st

5.  Venmo Reminder!

New Venmo is up and running for our Club Account (to pay dues, happy bux, lucky bux) - "@RotaryDelSol30", and it will show up as Herman Haase.  If you're set up using the old Club Account in Venmo, please change it.  The Club Foundation account ("@R-otaryDelSolFoundation") is staying the same.  Here's what it looks like when you access it:

Rotary Happenings

October is Economic and Community Development Month.  Many of our service projects including our ramp builds have positive impact on our Community and on our local economy.  We have ample opportunity to participate in similar projects this year and going forward.

October 24th is World Polio Day.  We are tentatively having an event at Kit Turpen's home on Friday, October 21st focusing on Polio.  More to come later this week.

District Happenings

1.  District Governor John Drusedum's blood drive challenge is still in effect through January 31st.  The goal is a total of 1000 units collected ("1000 Pints of Life").  Last year, the District gave out four Paul Harris Awards, and will do it again this year for the clubs with most pints donated.  More information on the Blood Drive Challenge can be found here:  documents/en-us/d1f076f4-1ea7-421c-abaa-df7d0e043a7d/1).

2.  The District will be conducting the Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) - Part 1 on October 15th.  This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about every aspect of Rotary - great for any Rotarian including members aspiring to Rotary Leadership and also for new members.  A number of our members have been involved in RLI, both as facilitators and as participants/graduates since its inception including Bruce Bortner, Bill Rothweiler, Bobby Wallace, and many others.  Please consider registering for the event (registration link below)

If you have any questions or are having any problems with the registration, please contact President Jeff.

Central Area Happenings

Our Club is part of the District's Central Area, which includes all the Clubs in Albuquerque and Rio Rancho as well as Clubs in the East Mountains and as far west as Grants and Gallup.  We have set up a website which contains information about what is going on in the Central Area including events that we can support.  Here's the link so you can see what our neighboring Clubs are doing in case you are interested in helping them:

Please feel free to call, text, or e-mail President Jeff (1-505-400-1403, jweinrach5520@nmia.com) if you have any feedback or suggestions for future Bulletin content or if you have any feedback or questions about any aspect of our Club.

Let's all have a great week in Rotary putting Service above Self!
